» Prof. Sonaiya, The Only Female Presidential Aspirant In The 2015 Election by: Patooh .:. Sat, 10 Jan, 2015 - 04:17:54:am GMT

.....Interestingly, some of the other nine candidates have come to the contest with impressive resumes. One of such candidates is Sonaiya, 59, the only woman in the contest. She is a professor of French and Applied Linguistics and a former lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile- Ife, Osun State. In 2008, Sonaiya was named an International Ambassador Scientist of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the first Nigerian to be appointed in the position she occupied between 2008 and 2014. Until recently, she was the National Public Relations Officer of her party. KOWA was registered as a political party on July 16, 2009, by a group of Nigerian civil society activists, professionals and technocrats. Sonaiya was a blogger for NEXT Newspaper until it stopped publishing and she is presently a columnist with The Niche, a Nigerian weekly newspaper. She is a Christian, who described herself as a true representative of the people. â€"I am running based on the strong conviction that somebody needed to do this â€" I mean somebody ordinary, a true representative of the people,” she said in her mission statement. If Sonaiya wins the election, she will become the first Nigerian female President. http://www.punchng.com/politics/2015-other- options-aside-from-jonathan-buhari/

Fifteen days to the presidential elections, and the whole country is at alert and ready to go to the polls to cast their votes. The independent national electoral commission seems ready to work and deliver an unbiased result. According to their claims, over seventy percent of the permanent voters card have been distributed and collected. Also, the readers' card which verifies the validity and eligibility of a PVC and a voter has been okayed for usage. What is left now is to set the ball rolling.

The incumbent's party and main opposition party have been at lodger heads. There have been calls for the INEC chairman to resign, there have been accusations and alleged plans to rig the elections, there have been propagandas et al, all just to do anything possible to influence the votes of the electorates come March 28th. While all these are going on, candidates of the other twelve parties vying for the Aso Rock seat are doing what they can to make their names known, and earn votes. Amongst these twelve is Professor Remi Sonaiya of KOWA party, the only female in the pack. A professor of linguistics : French and German majors.

The fact that she is the only female makes it all interesting. I saw her interview on one of Nigeria's internet TV station and she was narrating her plans, mission, challenges et al for the country. Although, the media hasn't really helped the matter by making only two candidates more known than the other, making it seem like the two are the only candidates. These two might have the two biggest platforms, and not have the two biggest plans for the country. It is such a pity that the voices of other candidates are not being heard, and no equal chance given to them. Most of these twelve too have come out to boldly say they are sure of winning, Prof. Remi inclusive. Well, all we can do is fold our arms and wait till the results are declared.
